Trash Proof Resumes!

"Why Your Resume Gets Tossed", reveals why recruiters throw away countless resumes and how you can avoid ending up in that pile.

"If you mention your age, we have to trash your resume," says Jeremy Eskenazi, vice president of talent acquisition at Idealab!, the California incubator firm. Since it's illegal for a company to solicit a candidate's age, race, or marital status during the hiring process, firms have adopted a "don't tell" policy to avoid potential bias suits. Many won't risk even having it handed to them.

Healthcare Reform

This is probably the best pro healthcare reform commercial I have ever seen. Hell, I'll pay more in taxes if I know that it's helping people like them.

On side note... filmmakers please notice the pacing and lack of dialogue. The juxtaposition of images tells the story. It's so Mamet.

Just say no... to Soda!

"What Soft Drinks are Doing to Your Body" -- Not only shows you how bad soft drinks can be, but tells you what you should be drinking. Seriously, soft drinks are just as bad for the body as a cigarette. It's amazing we still sell this stuff to kids.

"Soft drinks contain little to no vitamins or other essential nutrients. However, it is what they do contain that is the problem: caffeine, carbonation, simple sugars — or worse, sugar substitutes — and often food additives such as artificial coloring, flavoring, and preservatives."

Networking: What not to do...

Monster.com is stepping it up with their articles. I found Thirteen Networking Mistakes to be quite helpful, since it took a while for me into get used to carrying business cards around. Enjoy.

"(6) Being Pompous: While you're networking, you need to listen to what everyone else is saying. People help by offering advice. They are not interested in hearing how much you already know."

Miseducation USA: We need Universal Health Insurance

I was for Uni Health Insurance but after watching this I AM REALLY FOR Uni Health Insurance. It just doesn't make sense. Capitalism has this positive/negative pull on this country and Healthcare is bringing it to light.

Why We Need Government-Run Universal Socialized Health Insurance

A cartoon explanation of why we need a public health insurance option. If you agree that a public option should be part of the health care reform bill, make sure you let your representatives know! And take action at YoungInvincibles.org

The Job Posting Game!

So here is a great article from Monster.com (which I swear is a joke 90% of time) that tells you "how to increase your chances of landing an interview" by lying. Sort of. Either way, I found it helpful.

In today’s buyer’s market, employers have reason to be picky when it comes to credentials and degrees. “Companies that do this are usually trying to use the ad as a strong qualifier to cut down the massive number of resumes they receive,” explains Bethel, Connecticut-based job coach Judi Perkins. “The company hopes the list of requirements will deter the bulk of the unrealistic submittals.”

Jobs not leaving the USA

Yahoo!hotjobs put together a small list of jobs that will never be outsourced mainly because of convenience but still I think its an interesting list for people to look into. This job market is tough and having a job that is a little more stable may be your next best step instead of specializing in DNA computer chips. Right?

"Not so long ago, having advanced computer skills was considered the ultimate in job security. How times have changed. Now, tech jobs are among the most heavily outsourced. Research firm Computer Economics recently estimated that more than half of all software application development work was contracted out last year"

On a side note... I'm constantly telling people to go be a dentist first then chase your dreams.

"4. Dental hygienist -- No matter how far technology advances, it's unlikely you'll be able to get your teeth cleaned here by someone who's overseas. Bergson notes that once you're in the dental field, you can move fairly easily into a variety of other roles including selling dental supplies. Median annual salary: $57,148"

The Anti Bicycle

"...Amherst College graduate beginning her career in Washington, D.C., was killed in the nation's capital yesterday morning when she was run over by a garbage truck while riding her bicycle to work....She was riding westbound on R Street NW when the truck, traveling in the same direction, took a right turn and apparently did not see the cyclist..."
Northborough woman killed in D.C. -- The Boston Globe

I post this for a couple of reasons....

(1) My heart goes out to Miss Alice Swanson's family. She was so young and sounds like an eager hard working person, which this world needs more of everyday. She is an icon for young women who want to chase their dreams. This is truly a sad loss for us Washingtonians.

(2) I'm against riding bikes in the city. Its just too dangerous out there. I grew up in the suburbs and I rode my bike like a maniac when I was a kid. I have the scars and chipped tooth to prove it, but I will never let my loved ones buy a bike if they live in a city.

(3) Riding bikes in DC is HAZARDOUS and many people don't realize this. Luckily there are not a lot of deaths but I have seen with my own eyes at least two riders get hit by cars in DC. Plus I had a college friend end up in the hospital for weeks because she got clipped by a car while riding her bike in DC. So be aware of the risks and dangers.

(4) People, when driving a vehicle (especially large ones) in a city, please lookout for other vehicles, pedestrians, pets and BICYCLES! Bikes move faster then pedestrians so I know it can be hard to spot them and I have seen bikers break every traffic law known to man but still you're in a metal box and they're sitting on a metal stick. Do the math.

(5) This is a reminder that bike safety starts with the bicyclist. From what I've read about the accident it was the truck drivers fault. He really didn't see Miss Swanson, but I've driven large vehicles. You have to check your blind spots every time. Also I do know that when riding your bike in the city you need to play defense all the time so please EVERYONE you need to check out BicycleSafe.com and read the entire article about "How to Not Get Hit by Cars" plus the BikeArlington.com safety tips are pretty simple and helpful. Know them, practice them and ride safely.

Accidents happen but don't play with your lives people. We actually may need some of you one day.

"If you ride in such a way that a car has to see you to take action to avoid hitting you, then that means they will definitely hit you if they don't see you. But if you stay out of their way, then you won't get hit even if they didn't notice you were there."

Here's To Good Health #1 - Photoshop

As a video editor, I use this program like everyday. I know what it can do but I'm still amazed at how easily it is to abuse its power. This is bad for our culture, so love your body and only workout for your health.
